Joshua Benton is director of the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University, which he founded in 2008 to track and advance digital innovation in news. Before joining Harvard, he was a newspaper reporter and columnist, primarily at The Dallas Morning News; he reported from a dozen countries, won the nation’s top award for reporting on education, and was a three-time finalist for the Livingston Award for International Reporting. His reports on cheating on standardized tests in the Texas public schools led to the permanent shutdown of a school district and won the Philip Meyer Journalism Award from Investigative Reporters and Editors. He has been a fellow at Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University, and he is a native of small-town south Louisiana.
